Keeping Your Heat Pump Running in a Coastal Climate
With good care, most heat pumps last around 10 to 15 years, and coastal conditions can shorten that without regular attention. A tune-up in spring and fall keeps the system efficient and catches small problems before they turn into breakdowns.
A few simple habits help too:
- Change or clean the air filter every 1 to 3 months.
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, sand, and snow, with a couple of feet of open space around it.
- If you live near the beach, gently rinse salt and debris off the outdoor unit now and then, with the power off and a garden hose, never a pressure washer.
- Call for service if you see ice that won’t clear, hear unusual noises, or notice higher bills.

Heat Pump Rebates in Delaware and Maryland
The federal tax credit for heat pumps ended in 2025, but rebates are still available. In Delaware, Energize Delaware offers rebates on qualifying heat pumps through its Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, and Delaware Electric Cooperative and some municipal utilities, including Lewes, offer their own. Depending on the system and program, rebates can range from several hundred dollars to a few thousand.
Energize Delaware requires a home energy assessment and a rebate reservation before the installation starts, so ask about rebates before you choose a system. On Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Delmarva Power customers may qualify through EmPOWER Maryland programs. Funding and amounts change often, and we’ll help you check what’s available for your home.
